Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) is actively monitoring the ongoing nationwide shortage of IV fluid solutions, caused by disruptions at a major manufacturing facility in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. Despite the challenges being faced by healthcare systems across the country, SIH has taken proactive steps to ensure that patient care remains unaffected at all of its facilities.

No Immediate Impact on SIH Operations

At present, SIH’s four hospitals and the SIH Cancer Institute have not experienced any direct impact from the shortage. Our supply chain team has been diligent in securing enough IV fluids to maintain uninterrupted patient care.

Proactive Measures and Preparedness

SIH has worked closely with vendors to confirm our allocations and ensure continued deliveries of necessary supplies. Additionally, we have developed comprehensive mitigation strategies to address any potential future disruptions, should they arise. These efforts are part of SIH’s commitment to maintaining the highest level of care for our patients.

“We understand that there is widespread concern due to the national situation, but SIH is well-prepared to handle this challenge,” said SIH Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Bart Millstead. “Thanks to our proactive approach, we do not anticipate any disruption to patient care at this time, and our staff can continue providing the exceptional service our community relies on.”

Continuing Care Without Interruption

All departments at SIH facilities will continue with regular treatment protocols, with no need to modify or ration supplies. Patients should rest assured that their care will proceed without interruption. Staff members have been instructed to address any concerns expressed by patients and to report any issues related to IV fluid availability promptly.

“SIH remains in close communication with supply chain vendors and advocacy groups, including the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), to stay ahead of the situation and ensure access to vital resources,” Millstead added.

SIH will continue to stay vigilant and provide updates as necessary.
