Donation Enhances SIH Mulberry Center Renovation and Expansion
A $3,000 donation from the Gordon Graves Foundation, led by retired educator and Harrisburg native Linda Graves, marks a significant milestone for the SIH Mulberry Center renovation and expansion.
The donation was made in memory of Linda’s late husband, Gordon Graves, whose philanthropic legacy continues to impact communities nationwide.
Linda was inspired to contribute after attending SIH Harrisburg Medical Center Foundation’s Oktoberfest fundraiser, where Foundation Board Chair Angela Rowe spoke passionately about the expansion's importance.
“Her words touched me deeply,” Linda shared. “Our hospital in Harrisburg has always been a cornerstone of this community, and this expansion will provide critical mental health resources that are sorely needed.”
Located on the campus of SIH Harrisburg Medical Center, the Mulberry Center is the only non-state-operated inpatient mental health facility south of Interstate 64. The project will completely renovate the existing space while the expansion would add 10 – 12 additional patient beds, including a specialized medical-surgical psychiatric unit. This innovative unit will address the dual needs of patients requiring both medical and psychiatric care, ensuring continuity of care in one location.
“This unit will be transformative for mental health care in Southern Illinois,” Angela emphasized. “We are deeply thankful to Linda and the Graves Foundation. Their generosity exemplifies how individual contributions can transform lives and strengthen our community.”
Linda, who splits her time between Harrisburg and South Padre Island, Texas, reflected on the significance of her gift.
“This hospital holds a special place in my heart. It’s where two of my children were born and where our community turns in times of need. I’m honored to contribute to its future in memory of Gordon, who was a remarkable man with a profound sense of giving,” said Linda.
