SIH Implements Temporary Visitor Restrictions Due to Increased Flu Activity
Due to a significant spike in flu cases, temporary visitor restrictions will take effect on Feb. 6, 2025, at all four SIH hospitals. This measure is aimed at protecting patients, families and staff during the heightened flu season.
- Visitation is limited to individuals ages 18 and older.
- Each patient may have no more than two visitors at a time.
- Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, etc.) is asked to refrain from visiting.
Possible exceptions include, but are not limited to, end-of-life care and OB experience. In these circumstances, the visitor must have approval from the patient’s nurse and undergo an evaluation to rule out flu-like symptoms.
Flu Cases on the Rise
Since Oct. 1, 2024, SIH has recorded 566 cases of Influenza A and one case of Influenza B across its hospitals and clinics. Notably, 230 cases of Influenza A were diagnosed between Jan. 26 and Feb. 1, 2025, marking a sharp increase in flu activity.
This trend aligns with recent Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) data, which reports that the state’s overall respiratory illness level has risen from moderate to high. Health officials attribute this increase to a surge in emergency department visits and hospital admissions for flu-related complications.
IDPH Encourages Flu Prevention
IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra urges high-risk individuals—including seniors, young children, those with chronic conditions and immunocompromised individuals—to take extra precautions to avoid flu exposure. He also emphasizes the importance of early treatment, noting that antiviral medications are most effective when started within 48 hours of symptom onset.
To help reduce the spread of illness, masks and hand sanitizer are available at all SIH hospital entrances and throughout facilities.
