High School Summer Internship Program

The SIH Summer Internship Program has been developed to help pique the interest of high school students planning for a career in healthcare. Qualified students are eligible for an internship program from June 10th to July 17th in Laboratory, Nursing, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy and other approved career fields. Students entering their Sophomore, Junior year, Senior year, and graduating Seniors are eligible to apply. Students are required to attend two-three days per week, up to 4-6 hours per day for from June 10th to July 17th.

If you have an interest in science, running tests, working with specimens….AND reporting lab findings sound interesting to you… shadow a Medical Technologist!
Shadowing an X-Ray Technologist will allow you to see films being developed that capture images that will allow physicians to make correct diagnoses! If you have an interest in CT/MRI, Radiation Therapy or Ultrasound, consider the Radiology internship.
You may be watching a therapist administer meds and breathing treatments on patients or teaching a child how to use an inhaler when you shadow a Respiratory Therapist!
An IV pump is alarming, call lights continue to blink, the patient in room 10 needs more pain meds, the patient in room 20 needs to go back to bed…this is what you may experience when shadowing a Registered Nurse!
You will watch therapists help their patients recover or develop and maintain their daily living and work skills when you shadow a Physical or Occupational Therapist!
Providing information to patients about medications and their use; being in charge of the accuracy of medication orders and appropriate dosages are the duties you will shadow as a Staff/Clinical Pharmacist intern!

What is SIH Summer Internship Program?

The demand for healthcare workers is at an all-time high. Studies suggest that this trend will continue through 2030, which confirms the need for quality healthcare professionals. The SIH Summer Internship Program has been designed to assist in meeting this need, providing summer internship experience for high school students interested in designated healthcare disciplines.

The SIH Summer Internship Program has been developed to help pique the interest of high school students planning for a career in healthcare. Qualified students are eligible for an internship program starting on June 10th and endling on July 17th in Laboratory, Nursing, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Pharmacy. This program provides area high school students with an opportunity to learn more about different careers in the healthcare industry.

How do students apply for the internship?

Students are required to complete online application and send a copy of their high school transcripts to the SIH Recruiter, Jessica Vicente, by April 22nd. Due to the nature of the industry, we are looking for students who will be reliable, mature and able to interact with our patients and staff in a professional manner.

How long does the internship last?

The internship will last between 6-8 weeks and interns will be at the hospital two or three days per week based upon the department in which they are interning and the student’s availability. The program will begin in June. Interns will work only on day shifts (unless otherwise approved by departmental manager), 4-6 hours per day, Monday through Friday. Students must complete a hospital and departmental orientation before beginning their internship.

What department(s) will interns get to choose from?

Students will have the choice to gain internship experience from the following areas:
Laboratory, Nursing, Imaging, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, and Pharmacy.

Are interns compensated?

These internships are unpaid. Students will be given cafeteria cards to cover the cost of their meals while at the hospital . SIH will host an awards dinner for all participating interns at the end of their assignment.
