Barber Shop Men's Health Series
Prostate Cancer is a leading cause of death in men, but it doesn't impact everyone equally. According to Don Arnold II, MD, the disease is aggressive in the black and Latino communities.
"This is where we can have real conversations about real issues without judgment or fear," Dr. Arnold said.
"Especially in our community, there's a lot of lack of access to resources or information. So, we figured let's get the information to the people," said Jermaine Pryor. He's the manager of Arnette's Barber Shop in Carbondale. The community institution has been around for 79 years.
"Arnette's is more than a barbershop. We like to be active in the community," Pryor said.
The barber shop hosted the first in a series of events with Dr. Arnold focused on men's health. Members of the community could stop in and ask questions.
"I think it's very important to go where the people you serve, even though the people you serve can go to where you're at, it's sometimes good to meet them where they are, to see what some of the obstacles are and see what some of the barriers are, see what we can do to make that easier for them to come see us," Dr. Arnold said.
The next Barber Shop Men's Health event is set for September 16, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. at Quality Qutz in Murphysboro.
